Using Weblog to Promote Reading and Writing of the Chinese Language in Primary and Secondary Schools
Blogging activities have quickly developed into a mainstream for Internet users. The value of Weblog or Blog has gone beyond merely providing information. As a learning tool, Weblog provides a platform for discussion, expression of personal ideas and promotion of reading and writing of a language. CAITE has focused its effort in providing teacher professional development courses related to the use of ICT in education.
Commissioned by the Education Bureau, CAITE is conducting a training course entitled ˇ§Using Weblog to Promote Reading and Writing of the Chinese Language in Primary and Secondary Schoolsˇ¨ that gives the participants new insight into the academic value of Weblog. Participants will learn how to make good use of Weblog to promote reading and writing of the Chinese Language in secondary schools.
Twenty-four identical training events will be conducted between December, 2007 and November, 2008.

Nearly all primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong are now operated with the support of an Information Technology (IT) Coordinator or IT coordinating team to promote the use of IT in their schools. Currently, the Faculty of Education of The Chinese University of Hong Kong is providing advanced training courses to help these IT leaders to acquaint themselves with current developments in computer technology and to explore how the technology can be employed to the advantage of their students. The emphasis of these courses, however, is largely focused on the training of IT practitioners, nurturing their expertise to cope with practical tasks and technicalities arising from their day-to-day responsibilities. Training at this level is deemed inadequate to coincide with the determination of the HKSAR Government to help Hong Kong keep pace with technological developments in the IT era. What we need now are some reflective professionals who can actively involve themselves in the processes of investigating how IT can be fully capitalised on in education, from a wider perspective.
Offered by the Faculty of Education and administered by the Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research, the Master of Arts Programme in Information Technology in Education aims to provide advanced training for teachers, school administrators and school information technology coordinators to help them gain in-depth knowledge and practical skills in the application of information technology to teaching and learning, and in the administration of the IT environment. Aside from widening the knowledge base of participants, this Programme helps develop participants' research interests in different areas of inquiry crucial to information technology. One of the intended outcomes is to enable participants to become competent leaders in IT in education who are able to bridge the gap between practitioners and researchers.
